Part 11
I was walking fast and nerviously when I heard Nick calling me. I tried to calm down and when I turned around I even managed to smile.
‘Well, all is fine now,’ Nick said. He kissed me and I felt a little bit guilty for what almost happened with Mikel. But I tried to pretend everything was alright.
‘Glad to hear it,’ I said when we stopped kissing. ‘What is it going to be?’
‘Oh nothing much, just a crazy surprise trip, they wanted to take me with them, you know,’ Nick said and smiled to me. ‘Hey, maybe you want to go with us?’ he then asked suddenly.
‘With you?’ I reasked.
‘Yeah, with me, Ony, Javi, Basty and Mikel, of course,’ Nick said.
‘Uhm… No, better not. I guess it’s a boyish thing,’ I said and smiled to Nick. “I am not going anywhere with your brother,” I added in my mind.
‘Aw, too bad then, but maybe you are right,’ Nick said. He leaned to kiss me again, but he noticed Mikel coming to us and looked at him. I swore in my mind.
‘Nick, I was searching for you. The birthday cake is on the table,’ Mikel said and smiled askew to me. I blushed and turned my eyes away for some reason.
‘Oh, ok, we will come in a few then,’ Nick answered and looked at me. My eyes were still looking at a wall. ‘Right?’ Nick asked me.
‘Yeah yeah, sure, why not,’ I answered and sighed. I looked at Nick and for a second saw Mikel still smiling askew. His smile made me shiver again. “Asshole,” I thought.
‘So, you will wait till I get out so that you can keep kissing or will you finally go to eat cake?’ Mikel asked. Nick laughed.
‘Mikelito, you just know me too well,’ Nick said.
‘I know, Nicky boy… I told you your girlfriend doesn’t know you well enough yet,’ Mikel said and they both laughed. I started not to feel comfortable. Nick probably noticed that as he smiled to me.
‘He is just kidding, dear,’ he said.
‘I hope so, otherwise you will be very sorry in the end,’ I tried to joke too.
‘What a girl,’ Mikel said sarcastically and I felt like a cheap woman.
‘Ok, enough of chit-chat, let’s go,’ Nick said and I was happy it was almost over. I planned to ask to be taken home right after finishing the cake.
But my plans were ruined.
We sang a birthday song to Mikel, everybody gave him the presents. When we were eating cake and just chatting to each other (I had an amazing time and almost forgot all the bad things that happened between me and two brothers) Nick’s father asked him to help with something. Nick looked guilty at me.
‘Pa, I promised to take her home,’ Nick said and leaned to my side.
‘Mikel will be able to do that, right, son?’ his father answered. I almost dropped the fork.
‘Yes, pa,’ Mikel said and kept eating calmly like it meant totally nothing.
‘No no, it’s not a big problem, I’ll go home by bus,’ I tried to argue, but Nick looked at me worried.
‘No no and once again no! Surely you can’t go home with a bus! What are you thinking?’ he said.
‘But I… it’s… and…’ I was stuttering and Nick’s mother nodded.
‘Of course Mikel will take you home. He can drive well,’ she said and everybody nodded at the table. ‘I always said that Nick should get more practice,’ she added.
‘I am driving a car, it’s different,’ Nick said.
‘And what is Mikel driving? A tractor?’ I said. Everybody laughed.
‘No, I am driving a bike,’ Mikel said. I got worried. Me? Mikel? A bike?
‘No way am I going with him then,’ I said to Nick and grabbed his arm.
‘Don’t be silly now, everything will be fine,’ Nick said.
‘Nick, so can we go now?’ his father asked and Nick nodded.
‘I’ll call you tomorrow, ok?’ Nick asked and pecked me. Then he left.
Other guests started leaving too. Nick’s mother led them out the house and I happened to stay alone in the room with Mikel and his best friends again.
‘Well, time to go now,’ Basty said. ‘Goodbye, it was pleasure to meet you,’ he said to me and I also said goodbye. Then another guy said goodbye, his name was Javi. Finally the third guy came to say bye.
‘It was bery nice to meet you,’ he said and felt my eyes running out my head.
‘Yeah… Uhm…’ I stuttered and looked at his chest as I remembered Ker’s words. “Yeah, she was right,” I thought when I noticed it was rude of me to stare like that. I smiled and three guys left.
Now I was all alone with Mikel in the room.
I tried to ignore him, but he stood up and gave me his hand.
‘Shall we go now?’ he asked and I smiled fake to him.
‘If you don’t get me home safe, I promise that it will be very painful for you,’ I said and Mikel laughed. He was chewing something again…
