The next morning I woke up with the feeling that my throat was like the Sahara dessert. I opened my eyes and saw Mikel sleeping next to me. I tried to wake him up. After a while he reacted.
‘Morning. How do you feel?’
‘My throat..’
I whispered. Mikel got up and walked to the bathroom. He came back with a glass of water.
‘Here..’
And he gave me the glass. I took some of the water and putted the glass down on my bedside table.
‘I think I really have a cold..’
My voice was hoarse. I cought softly and took some more water.
‘Did you slept here last night?’
My voice was still hoarse and very soft.
‘Yes.. I couldn’t leave you alone.. I didn’t want to.’
He smiled at me. His hair was a bit messed up. Basty opened the door of my bedroom and walked inside.
‘I already thought that I heard Mikel..’
‘Hola amigo!’
‘Hola! You are early!’
Basty looked confused at us.
‘I was already here.’
Now he looked even more confused.
‘I slept here tonight. I stayed with Maria.’
‘Explaine me, ok? It’s a bit early and I don’t get a thing of it..’
Mikel explained the whole happening of last night, except the reason why we were in the park.
‘And now she has a cold.’
Basty nodded.
‘Right.. Are you two coming? Mom made breakfast. I’m sure that she knows about that you’re here?’
‘I think so..’
‘What? Could you repeat that Mar?’
‘I think so..’
I tried to speak up a bit, but it wasn’t easy. It hurted to speak normaly.
‘Ok.. I’ll say that you two are coming.’
I nodded and he walked out of my bedroom. I got up from my bed. The whole room was turning around in front of my eyes. Mikel noticed that something was wrong and before my world turned black he pushed me back on my bed. I blinked a few times and the room plus Mikel stopped turning in front of my eyes. I saw Mikel’s worried face.
‘I’m fine. Really.’
I smiled brave at him. He smiled back and laid his hand on my forehead.
‘You’re glowing! I’m gonna get Ana.’
‘Mikel, I’m fine! Really!’
But he didn’t listened to me. He ran downstairs and not much later he and Ana walked back upstairs.
‘Mom, I’m fine.. Really.’
She putted her hand on my head.
‘Cariño, you’re not. You are glowing. I think you have the flew.’
‘I can’t be sick! My final exams!’
‘When you’re sick, you are. Nothing can change it. You stay here in bed untill you’re better.’
Under protest I got back in bed. Mikel sat down on the edge of my bed.
‘My exams.. How am I gonna graduate now?’
‘It’s gonna be fine, trust me. You have to rest now. And get better.’
He smiled to me and I closed my eyes. Soon I was asleep.

After a few houres I woke up. Mikel was gone. I felt much better and came out of my bed. I took a T-shirt and a gray homepants, putted it on and walked downstairs. Mom was sitting in a chair, reading a book. She looked up when I came in.
‘How do you feel?’
‘Better. Thanks. Where’s Mikel?’
I sat down on the couch.
‘He and Basty left to school. Basty can be home any second.’
The door opened and Basty walked in.
‘Hey sis! How are ya?’
‘A bit better. Thanks!’
An another person walked inside.
‘Hola!’
‘Hey Mikel!’
He sat down next to me and kissed me softly on my cheek.
‘Feeling better?’
‘Yes. I slept a bit and it helped.’
‘Good to hear. Shall I tell you the homework we have?’
‘Let me get some tea firts. Want some?’
He nodded and I walked into the kitchen to make some tea.
‘You too Basty?’
‘Yeah, sure.’
A few minutes later I walked back with the tea.
‘Good.. Tell me the homework.’
And I sat back down next to Mikel. He began to tell me the homework we had and helped me with it.

After a while my mom nocked on my door.
‘Are you gonna stay here for dinner, Mikel?’
‘If that’s okay, yes.’
She walked back downstairs. Not much later she called us:’Maria, Mikel! Dinner’s ready!’
We walked downstairs. After dinner Mikel left.
‘I think that my parents wanna see me.. I haven’t been home al day.’
He smiled and kissed me.
‘Ciao! Get better soon amiga!’
‘I’ll try my best! Ciao! Love you.’
He waved and walked away. I closed the door and sat on the couch. Together with Basty and mom I watched tv. After a couple of houres I went to bed.

The next morning I was feeling way much better.
‘Are you sure that you want to go to school?’
‘Yes mom. I don’t like to be sick..’
I putted my clothes on and walked downstairs. After breakfast I left to school. Mikel was happy to see me again. Together we walked into the school, to our first exam.

After a month of studying, exams and stress we all passed. We were graduated. And very happy! But with our graduation came Mikel’s goodbye closer and closer. And I didn’t want to say goodbye.

We were having a party to celebrate it. Al our classmates were on the beach at the river, partying. Including Ans, Basty, Sabine, Ony, Hen and Javi. Mikel and I were sitting on the sand, near the water. It was dark, and torches were giving some light so you could see where you putted your feet. I was sitting with my head against his shoulder, staring into the water. It reflected the moon and stars. Mikel had his arm around me. On the background you heard US5 – The rythem of life.
‘I have something for you..’
He looked into my eyes. I looked back. He took a small box and gave it to me. Curious I opened it. It was a beautiful bracelet with a small plate. Our names and a date were engraved in it.
’06-07-’08.. That’s the day you asked me..’
I smiled at him.
‘I know.. I wanted to give you something to remember me when you’re in Australia.’
He took the bracelet and putted it on my wrist.
‘I-uh.. I have also something for you..’
I took the small box out of my pocket and gave it to him. Curious he opened it. He looked from the box to me and back to the box. He took the silver ring out of it. The same date was engraved in it: 06-07-’08.
‘Do you like it?’
Mikel looked at me, right into my eyes.
‘Yes. Thank you. I’ll never forget you, and wait here till you’re back.’
‘Seven years without you.. It will be hard..’
‘But we’ll survive.’
He smiled and got up from the sand.
‘Come, let’s dance..’
He pulled me up. We heard the beginning of Heaven. And the original version of it, the one of Bryan Adams. The lyrics fitted perfect with this moment. We walked back to the others. Mikel laid his arms around me and pulled me against his chest. I laid my head on his shoulder and my arms around his neck. We just enjoyed of the moment together and didn’t care about our classmates and frriends who were there. It was just Mikel and me. No one could take this moment away from us. Our love would never die.


Soon it was time to go. At the end of the week Mikel and I were gonna leave.
‘Come sis. We have to go..’
Ans, Ony, Hen, Javi, Mikel, Sabine, Basty and I walked to the cars. Mikel gave me a kiss.
‘I’ll see you soon. Maybe tomorrow..’
‘Yes.. If I can’t see you this week, I’ll come thursday and sleep there. Than we can go to the airport together.’
I kissed him back.
‘Come on! Maria we need to go!’
I gave Mikel one last kiss and got into the car. While Basty took off I waved at Mikel. He sent an airkiss and soon he was a little dot on the beach.

Mom was waiting for us in the livingroom.
‘How was the party?’
‘It was great. Ans and I have danced a lot..’
He smiled and sat down on the couch.
‘Mikel and I have talked. He gave me this..’
I showed her the bracelet.
‘What did he said about the ring?’
Basty asked me.
‘He was very happy with it..’
I smiled a sad smile. I sat down next to him, with a pillow against my belly.
‘I’m gonna miss him..’
A tear rolled over my cheek. Mom came sitting next to us and laid her arm around me.
‘He’s gonna miss you too cariño.. I know, 7 years is a long time.. But you’ll survive it.’
I laid my head on her shoulder.
‘Thanks mom..’
She caressed my shoulder and hugged me.
‘But what are you gonna do Basty?’
I asked him.
‘Following a study here.. To become a pilot. I always wanted to fly.. What are you gonna do there?’
‘Hmm.. I think that I’ll help Lynn and Dave on their farm for a few years and than move on to Miami to become a detective. Maybe that Lynn and I are gonna visit our parents grave..’
‘That would be great.’
Mom smiled. I smiled too and yawned.
‘Good night..’
I gave her a hug and walked upstairs. I fell asleep, staring at the picture of my mom, dad and sister.

Part 25


Soon it was thursday and my bags were packed. Three suitcases were waiting downstairs for me. I had the same feeling as that day in April, back in Holland. Basty and Ana were moving back to Cádiz. Basty could follow the study there. I was sitting on my bed, looking at my bracelet. The radio was playing some happy songs. But I was feeling everything except happy. I walked to the window and opened it. The wind was playing with my curtains and hair. I closed my eyes and dreamed away.
‘Maria, we’re leaving!’
I opened my eyes and closed the window. With a sad feeling in my heart I closed the door of my bedroom. Basty was busy with putting my luggage in the boot.
‘Ready to go sis?’
I sighed and nodded.
‘Although I don’t wanna leave, I am..’
I got into the car and sat down on the backseet. Basty sat down next to Ana in the front and she took off to Madrid. She stopped in front of Mikel’s house. Basty got my stuff out of the car and they walked with me to the frontdoor. I pressed on the doorbell and Dani opened the door.
‘Hola! Come in!’
We walked inside and Basty putted the suitcases down next to the stair. Dani took us into the livingroom and walked back to the hall.
‘Romeo! Get your ass here!’
‘DANI! I’m NOT Romeo!’
He walked downstairs and into the livingroom. When he saw me he began to smile.
‘Hola chica!’
I got up from the couch and walked to him. He hugged me tight and kissed me. Also lady and sir Hennet came into the room.
‘Hola Maria. Nice to see you again.’
Lady Hennet smiled to me. We sat down and our parents began to talk.
‘Shall we sneak out?’
Mikel whispered in my ear.
‘Good idea..’
I smiled and we walked out of the room. Mikel took two of my suitcases and began to walk upstairs. I took the other one and followed him.
‘You’ll sleep on my room. Or you don’t want to.’
He stuck his tongue out.
‘Hmmm.. Lemme think..’
We walked into his room.
‘Yeah, I wanna sleep here.’
His room was clean and his bed was made up. He had a double bed and this time there was also a pilow lying at the other side of the bed.
‘I’m sorry, but we have to share the bed..’
‘That doesn’t matter.. Cozy..’
I smiled and putted the suitcase down. We sat down on the bed.
‘Shall we play on the playstation? I’m gonna kick your ass this time!’
I smiled and we sat down at the tv and playstation.
‘Na-ah! I’m gonna win again! Like always when we play Grand theft auto!’
He started the game and we began to play.
‘Maria! Are you gonna say goodbye?’
Mikel pressed pause and we walked downstairs. Basty and Ana were standing at the door.
‘Ciao Mar. I see you tomorrow at the airport.’
Basty hugged me.
‘And behave tonight.’
He whispered in my ear.
‘Good for you that I don’t have a pillow here! See you tomorrow bro.’
I released him and Ana gave me a hug.
‘Hasta luego. We’ll see you tomorrow.’
‘Bye mom.’
They walked outside and I waved untill they were a small dot at the end of the street.
‘Good.. Let’s go back upstairs. I’m winning this time!’
‘In your dreams missy!’
We ran back upstairs and continued playing.

‘Aha,aha! Told ya!’
I danced around the room.
Mikel smiled and pushed me down on the bed.
‘I kicked your ass. And I like it.’
I said with a huge smile.
‘Well, winner. Shall I give you your prize?’
He smiled and looked into my eyes.
‘And what did I won?’
I felt his soft lips and kissed him back. His left hand was stroking my shoulder while he supported his weight with the other. My fingers were playing with his hair.
‘Guys! Dinner’s ready!’
Mikel groaned softly.
‘Always on the good moments that they interupt..’
He got up and walked out of the door. Quick I followed him. A bit pissed off he sat down at the dining table. Dani looked at him and than at me.
‘Don’t ask..’
Sabine sat down next to me.
‘So, you’re going to Australia?’
‘Yep.. And maybe after two years that I move on to Miami..’
‘I have to go back to Holland.. But not for long.. I leave most of my stuff here and come back as soon as posible.. If my parents let me go..’
‘Chica, I’m sure they will.’
I gave her a wink. Lady Hennet putted the pan on the table.
‘Mmm.. Smells good madam.’
‘You can call me Isabel dear.’
I smiled. Isabel putted some of the paella on my plate. I waited untill the others had their dinner too and started to eat.

After dinner we watched tv together. Everybody just fitted in the livingroom. Dani, Sabine, Mikel and I were sitting on the couch. Ruben and Isabel on a chair. We were watching the news. I layed with my head against his chest and he had his arm around me.
‘Mikel, Maria. It’s better that you two go to sleep.. Your planes will leave around eleven..’
I stretched my arms and rubbed my eyes.
‘And don’t do anything what I wouldn’t do..’
Dani looked at us with a grinn.
‘Dork..’
‘Candycane…’
‘Boys, boys.. Behave yourself.’
Ruben looked a bit angry at his sons.
‘But he started!’
‘I don’t care Mikel. You have to behave like a good boy. So has Dani.’
‘Yes dad.’
They both said at the same time.
‘And Dani, don’t worry.. We will go to sleep like brave teenagers..’
I stuck my tongue out to him. We said good night to them and walked upstairs. After we had brushed our teeth and putted pyjamas on we got into bed.
‘Sueños suaves..’
And Mikel gave me a good night kiss. I kissed him back and laid down on my back, staring at the cealing. Soon I heard sounds of a sleeping Mikel. I turned my face to him and smiled.
‘Good night..’
I whispered and closed my eyes while I laid down closely to him. The last thing I noticed was that he laid his arm around me. Soon I was asleep.
